NATURE

A large part of Scotland is in a constant battle with nature. It can get very cold and windy in Scotland, not to mention all the wind! Most of the islands of Scotland are rocky, and like the Highlands, not very easy to survive on.

Scottish castles protected people from enemies, but also from the harsh weather outside.

Activity 11: Munro Bagging

A Munro is a mountain in Scotland which is over 3,000 feet (914.4m) high. There are 282 Munros in Scotland. The word Munro comes from Sir Hugo Munro who was the first person to list all these mountains.

To “bag” a munro means to climb it, so Munro bagging means climbing one or more Munros. Some people climb Munros as a hobby and try to climb every single one. So far only around 6,500 people have managed to do this.

Hugo is a Munro-bagger.

He has calculated exactly which order to climb the Munros. The only problem is that he’s lost the list. He can remember a few of the details but not everything.

Can you read the clues below and work out which Munros he should climb today?

CLUES

  • One of the Munros he’s supposed to climb is Sgurr Mor.

  • In total he will climb 2,037 metres - no more, no less.

  • He can only climb 2 mountains in 1 day
