Let’s start with a fact about Viet Nam…
That’s right…
Vietnam is actually spelled Viet Nam
Even though we’re used to spelling it Vietnam, in the country itself, and at the UN it’s spelled Viet Nam. If possible, it’s always best to spell or pronounce country names how the people from those countries call themselves.
Here are a few more facts…
Here’s a map of Viet Nam
It’s a long, S-shaped country with a long sea coast. It’s close to big powers China and Japan and is the neighbour of Cambodia and Laos.
Viet Nam has 2 big rivers - the Mekong and the Red. These rivers spread out a lot before they reach the sea, creating large, wet areas where lots of green things grow.
It’s very easy to grow rice in these wet areas, so lots of Vietnamese cooking uses rice and many Vietnamese people eat rice every single day.
Viet Nam also exports a lot of its rice to other countries. Check the rice in your kitchen cupboards - it might be from Viet Nam!
Can you speak Vietnamese?
In Viet Nam most people speak Vietnamese. It’s a tonal language, which means that the same word pronounced in different ways makes the meaning change. Chinese is also a tonal language, but they’re not very similar apart from that.

Have you tried Vietnamese food?
Vietnamese food is becoming more and more popular, because it’s delicious and healthy.
Vietnamese cooking uses lots of fresh vegetables, fish, chicken or beef and either rice or noodles.
Below are some famous Vietnamese foods. If you travel there, or go to a Vietnamese restaurant you should try them!
Bánh xèo is a type of pancake filled with prawns and bean sprouts
Pho is a lovely soup filled with noodles, herbs and sometimes meat
Goi cuon is a type of spring roll - a parcel of prawn and meat wrapped in rice paper
Bánh mì is a delicious a baguette filled with a mixture of meat, vegetables, pickles and daikon
In Viet Nam it’s very common for people to eat with chopsticks. Chopsticks are two sticks of wood, usually bamboo. You use them like pincers, but in one hand only, to grab the food and put it in your mouth.
Here’s a handy lesson to learn how to use chopsticks - remember to practice!
Do you want to cook some Vietnamese food yourself?
