Our favourite bloggers recommend their favourite maps...

It’s Map Week and we want to hear all about your favourite maps and what they mean to you.

We asked a bunch of our friends in the travel industry what their favourite map is and why. Here’s what we found out…

Marianne Perez de Fransius, from Bébé Voyage

“Our family’s favourite map is América Invertida by Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres García. We love it for a couple of reasons: it gives us a new perspective on what many people hold as true, even though it’s only a convention; we currently live in South America, which gives us a connection to it; and finally, we learned about Garcia through our 4-year-old son. He was in a fantastic nursery school and learned about García and his art. When we took a trip to Montevideo, he gave us a tour of the JTG Museum”

“My favourite map is this hand-drawn map by Louisa Elizabeth, which my husband gave to me as a wedding anniversary present. We use it to record the places we’ve been and where we’d like to go next. We haven’t added many new pins recently, but it’s been great for homeschooling!”

Claire Hall runs Tin Box Traveller, a family travel blog and Devon With Kids, a blog dedicated to activities and trips for kids in Devon.

Patty Monahan from Our Whole Village

“I love maps but my favourite map is a set we created when I first started Our Whole Village. When we started, we wanted to offer kids different ways to connect with the world, in addition to travel. These 3 maps were a fun way to do that – we used them to track the places we’d been to, explore our roots and inspire future travel.

These maps have a special place in my heart because they were created with love and mark the beginning of my journey as a travel advisor and entrepreneur focused on designing meaningful adventures for families.”

Our Whole Village is a travel company which helps plan meaningful vacations for families who want to create lifelong memories and show their kids the world in a more conscious and intentional manner.

Joram and Laura from Deliberate Travel Kids

That’s right, we’re putting in our own favourite maps too!

Joram’s favourite is this little round beauty which we got in New Zealand. It shows the Queen Charlotte Track, a 5-day hike at the northern tip of the South Island. It was a really tough hike (don’t ask Laura about the shower incident), but very worth it. Later we found these maps bound by embroidery loops at a market in Picton. The QCT was one of the only ones left so it seemed like fate.

Laura’s favourite map is this illustrated map of Lochaber in Scotland. We found it completely by chance in a leaflet in a tourist centre just before heading to our first Highland Games. When we moved into our house it was the first map we put on the wall.

The illustrations are beautiful and Laura would prefer that all Ordnance Survey maps came with them.

More coming soon…
