5 activities to try with kids this week
When we’re producing the workbooks we come up with so many fun activities that kids could do, which just don’t fit in. So we’ve decided to run a weekly series of 5 activities kids can try at home. Some will be related to our content, some will be related to travel or the world, and some will just be fun, random ideas we’ve come up with.
Here we go!
Make a Junkanoo mask
Junkanoo is a festival in the Caribbean which happens every Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, particularly in the Bahamas and Jamaica. There are debate as to where the name came from but some claim the word comes from the French gens inconnus (unknown people) as the revellers wear masks, or after the Ghanan King John Canoe, who defending his peeople against European enslavementt for 20 years.
Junkanoo is a celebration of African culture in the Caribbean and is accompanied by music, dancing and street parades. Participants wear beautiful and colourful masks.
When we made our Jamaica worrkbook we also made a Junkanoo mask for kids to cut out and use themselves. You can download the cut out mask here, or a colouring-in version so that kids can make their own Junkanoo masks!
2. Have a themed picnic
Pick a culture, then have a picnic themed around that place! You could have a French picnic with croissants, french cheeses, baguettes or even something fancier like Quiche Lorraine. You could have a Jamaican themed picnic with some jerk chicken, Rundown (a type of stew), fried plantains and some virgin cocktails. Or have an Aussie themed barbecue - don’t forget the Vegemite!
3. Visit the Met Museum (the website is almost better than the museum!)
The Met Museum has an amazing children’s section on their website. One section in particular is called The Time Machine, where kids can search by time, geography or big ideas and learn about different exhibits. Unlike lots of kids website, this one is beautifully designed with fun buttons for kids to play around with. Great to distract them for a while…
4. Learn about baby hippos with The Fiona Show
Lots of zoos are opening up their virtual gates to show what’s going on behind the scenes in zoos. Any kids who are animal lovers should check out the Cinncinati Zoo which has loads of wonderful content about animals. Our favourite is the story of Fiona the baby Hippo, who was born 6 weeks premature but has been thriving ever since!
There are 3 seasons of episodes on Fiona’s story available on Facebook, with updates all the time. She is totally adorable.
5. Suggest a country for Deliberate Travel to cover!
Does your kid have a favourite country? Do you? We’re always looking for new ideas for countries, so why not suggest one for us? You can email us at info@deliberatetravel.com, or DM us on any of our social media accounts.
