5 Instagram accounts to follow if you can’t stand #travelgram

Maybe you’ve already read our post about the unique problems created by the combination of travel and Instagram. Perhaps you agree, perhaps you don’t. But after you’ve seen these Instagram accounts which all call out problematic '#travelgram behaviour you might end up on our side of this issue…

Public Lands Hate You (publiclandshateyou) specifically calls out bad Instagram behaviour in National Parks and public lands in the United States. It feeds into broader issues addressed by accounts like Indigenous Geotags about who public land actually belongs to, but addresses the issue specifically from an Instagram perspective.

Insta Repeat (insta_repeat) is a gentle reminder about the repetitive nature of lots of travel Instagram content. The account compares (incredibly) similar photos, often from the same places, demonstrating how the “Instagram Travel Aesthetic” is actually pretty reductive and homogenous.

Influencers in the Wild (influencersinthewild) is hilarious. Short videos recording the bizarre behaviour of Instagram influencers and wanna-bes, it’s a great reminder of what a bizarre concept the enterprise is. People cavorting in piles of leaves or getting knocked over by waves trying to achieve the perfect shot are common features.

You Did Not Sleep There (youdidnotsleepthere) takes on the #travelgram aesthetic from an outdoor/adventure travel perspective. Addressing the trend of seemingly impossible camping site photographs, it calls out people for the lengths they go to in order to get a unique shot - something which rarely translate into actual experiences.

Insta Wrecked (insta_wrecked) covers travel & Instagram clashes of all sorts. From people behaving badly around monuments or on public lands, to featuring chicks in bikinis using the Australian bush-fires as background for their Insta likebait.
